About The Crowell Family: The Crowell Family has been supportive of both Scouting and Camp Glen Gray for over 100 years. The family has a very rich heritage of both contributing to Camp Glen Gray financially and in participation at camp and as active Scouting folks dating back as far as 1917. Their contribution spans four generations and continues to this present day. Thomas Irving Crowell I was a contemporary of Frank Gray and was involved early with Mr. Gray in helping form Scouting in Montclair. He also supported and worked with Mr. Gray in planning and building Camp Glen Gray in its very early years. His three sons, Adams, Robert & Thomas Irving II were all young Scouts during the early years of Scouting & Glen Gray. Adams Leyland Crowell had attended Camp Glen Gray in his first year before his tragic death in 1917 due to an elevator accident in New York. After his death the family donated his entire savings of $ 237.60 to Camp Glen Gray for the ballfield and the dam projects. As per the instructions of Frank Gray the field will be given Adams' name along with other projects in camp that needed funding. Robert Leyland Crowell was a member of Troop 4 Montclair and camped at Glen Gray in the 30's and 40's. Robert spend 9 years at Camp Glen Gray as a Scout and on staff. Thomas Irving Crowell II was a member of the Eagle Rock Council Board and the Glen Gray Camp Committee as well as a Silver Beaver award recipient. He was inducted into the Old Guard in 1950. Thomas Irving Crowell II had four sons, James, David, Ken and Thomas Irving III. James Crowell was a Patrol Leader in the late 1930's in Essex Fells as well as at Glen Gray. James was also an Eagle Scout. David Crowell was a Life Scout who camped at Glen Gray in the 1930's & 1940's. He was inducted into the Old Guard in 2008. David has and continues to support Glen Gray through the years generously as does today at age 91. This year David has donated a very large amount financially to Glen Gray to increase our endowment fund for future camp needs. David also has served as a Scoutmaster in both Pennsylvania and Vermont. In 1959 David married Helen Bennett who was very active as support staff for the Crowell Scouts in planning meals & camping trips to Glen Gray and well as a being a regular chauffeur to camp. Kenneth Crowell was inducted into the Old Guard in 1949, is an Eagle Scout ,a member of Troop 2 Caldwell and served on Glen Gray camp staff in the 1950's. Ken continues at age 87 to contribute to Glen Gray. Thomas Irving Crowell III was the fourth son of David and Helen. David & Helen had three children, John, and twins Elizabeth and Paul. John was a Troop 12 Scout in the 70's & 80's as well as being the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 12 in 1981. John has contributed regularly to Glen Gray and this year has given camp a very sizable donation In Honor Of His Father David during our current difficult financial times. Daughter Elizabeth lives with and cares for her 91 year old father David. Paul Crowell was a Scout in Troop 12 Montclair in the 70's and 80's as well as a Troop 12 Senior Patrol Leader.
