When is camp open?
The camp is open most weekends during the year starting from Friday 5PM night thru Sunday morning. Campers are required to be out of camp by 11AM Sunday morning. Use is by reservation only and must be made at least one week in advance. Can my friends and I come up to camp for the weekend? County regulations require that all campers must be 21 or over unless accompanied by a parent or guardian or under the supervision of an organized youth group. Use is by reservation only and must be made at least one week in advance. All youth in camp are expected to adhere to the Buddy System meaning no one should be moving around camp by themselves. They must be with a buddy, parent or guardian or organized group leadership Can I come up to camp for the day to fish or hike? No. Glen Gray is available for overnight camping only, not for day use. Campers are welcome to fish or hike as much as they like. I'm handicapped, what accommodations are there to allow me to come up to camp? Camp Glen Gray is a rustic camp with dirt and gravel roads and many other physical challenges. Two of our cabins have ramps to allow wheelchair access. Weather permitting and with the availability of the camp truck, we will bring guests up to these cabins. These arrangements must be made in advance with the camp office to insure availability. We welcome you and will do everything we can to accommodate your stay at camp. Can I drive up to my campsite? To preserve the camp environment, private vehicles and trailers are not allowed beyond the camp parking lot. However, the camp can provide trucking to your site for a fee. How far in advance must I reserve a site at camp? Reservations should be made at least one week in advance of your desired dates. Walk-ins are not accepted. Can I bring my pet with me to camp? No, Bergen County regulations do not allow campers to bring pets to Camp Glen Gray. Service animals are, of course, welcome at camp. Is swimming permitted in Lake Vreeland? No. County regulations do not permit swimming while visiting/camping at Camp Glen Gray. Use of the lake is limited to fishing and boating as outlined in these FAQs. Do the campsites/cabins have water? Select campsites and cabins have water in season. (Mid April through October) Water is available year round at the Headquarters' and West Wells. Refer to the Campsite and Cabin pages for specific on water availability. |
Do you provide firewood to heat my cabin?
No. Campers are welcome to collect and use all dead wood on the ground. The cutting of standing trees (dead or alive) is prohibited. Seasoned firewood is available for purchase at the Camp Office. Firewood may not be brought into camp due to the possible presence of invasive species. Power tools (gas or electric), including chains saws and reciprocating saws are not permitted. Can I bring an electric or gas heater to use in my cabin? No. All cabins have wood burning stoves for heat. Can I hunt on camp property? No. Hunting is prohibited. Can I bring my mountain bike with me? No. County park regulations prohibit mountain bikes. Can I bring alcoholic beverages with me when I camp? Bergen County regulations do not permit alcoholic beverages or drugs at Camp Glen Gray. Violators will be required to leave and forfeit all monies paid. Do you sell food at camp? No - Food stores are available in nearby Oakland, NJ. Small items such as soda, water and snacks are available for purchase at the Camp Office. Can we sled in the winter? Because of the wooded nature of the camp, sledding can be dangerous. Therefore, sledding is not permitted. Winter campers may bring sleds to transport their gear. Can we ice skate in the winter? Lake Vreeland looks beautiful in the winter, but under the ice it is up to thirty feet deep. For the safety of campers, you cannot venture onto the lake when it is frozen over. Can I bring my canoe/kayak up to camp? The camp provides rowboats for rental in season. Private watercraft are not permitted in camp on the lake. Can I bring electrical appliances with me to camp? For safety reasons, the camp cannot accommodate plug in appliances. However, all cabins have forms of heat, lighting and cooking appliances. |
